Amazing New Dodge Viper ACR-X V-10 Dyno Test
Viper Powertrain Development Engineer Dick Winkles takes us through a dyno test of the V-10 powerplant under the hood of the Dodge Viper ACR-X race car. The engine generates more than 600 horsepower. The test was conducted at the Chrysler Technical Center, Auburn Hills, Michigan.

@Stakan1
The Viper V10 wasn't engineered to run past 6500 rpm because it makes all its peak power at 5200 for a medium range power curve with lots of natural torque. A few friends of mine that have modded their Vipers have gotten the engine to spin around 7500 rpm but you dont need any more then that, especially with turbos added.

@Inverted314 The ACR-X has a rollcage and a drivers seat for an interior. Fixed.

@Stakan1
In short, larger engines have larger parts that are harder to spin faster without sacrificing reliability (among other things). To get an 8.4 liter v10 to spin much above 6k, you need fancy metals, fancy timing, with plenty of fancy engineering and engine programming. That all increases cost, for both the manufacturer and for customers. Wankel rotaries are inherently small, and don't need too much massaging to reach 9k. I hope that helps.
Stakan1 January 25, 2012 a 2:43 am
I don't get it. I'm a hobby mechanic, so I don't know a whole lot about engines and I admit that. But something I've always wondered, is why my Mercedes 2.0 190 goes 6000rpm, my nissan 2.0 primera goes 7000 rpm. And this 600hp v10 is mesured on >6000? Why? You need Vankel to get above 9k?

@techdavey1000 viper tops out at 220mph..jus saying

Jaguar is still the one to have. The new designs are quite remarkable and recently a pensioner in England gave the company some free advertising. He was radar gunned at 147mph on the way home from the golf club. Naughty naughty!

177SCmaro January 16, 2012 a 3:29 am
@kylehattan You mean like the Bugatti Veyron's W16 engine? Yeah, they're fine if you like engines with cumbersome external dimensions and weight not justified by their displacement.
kylehattan January 16, 2012 a 2:23 am
@177SCmaro W-type engines FTW! lol
chevyfan383 January 13, 2012 a 10:17 am
@Inverted314 who gives a fuck about the interior when you're going 200 plus mph?

@117nathanmyers Never said ALL, I said most, if not all of the most powerful auto RACING engines are V type. That just means that right this moment all the top tier race cars, such as Top Fuel and F1, are using V type engines.
Obviously it's possible to get a lot of HP out of an inline, look what F1 was doing with turbo cars a while back. But right now none of the big HP cars are using inline engines in organized racing, at least that I am aware of. If I'm wrong give me examples.
117nathanmyers December 29, 2011 a 9:01 am
I'm sorry. i would say maybe about 50% of newer cars are inline 4s. everything else is Vs. and I was mistaken I'm sorry. For F1 racing they use V type engines because they are smaller. as you said. the bodies on F1 cars are kinda cramped. (I was thinking about a different type of racing) I was giving you examples of engines that were powerful inline engines so you couldn't say ALL the most powerful engines. most are V type. Both are great engine designs and both have advantages.
177SCmaro December 29, 2011 a 8:25 am
@117nathanmyers Never said inline was bad. But the V configuration is a better cylinder layout for most applications.
What economy car has an inline? Ever popped the hood on 90% of the economy cars out there? Inline 4 cylinders are VERY common!!
F1 does not use engines of large displacement btw, unless you think 2.4L is a big engine.
I said MOST, if not all, of the most powerful auto engines out there are V type engines. Do you really want examples? Google is your friend.
117nathanmyers December 29, 2011 a 7:44 am
@117nathanmyers so it really depends on the application on what type of engine is better. I will continue to be an inline engine fan. I do agree that they don't make very good use of the space and they aren't put in many cars anymore. That doesn't make it a bad engine. It is just not what most people want. what low cost economy car has an inline? I can't think of any. Everything is V type. Personally I like working on inline engines more than v type. The cummins is so simple compared to a 3vze.
117nathanmyers December 29, 2011 a 7:24 am
@177SCmaro The engine does require a much longer compartment. most cars produced today use V type engines because people like a smaller compartments. Most super cars use engines with huge displacements. if they used an inline in a super car the car would also be huge. if the super car manufactures could put an inline with a large displacement in their car they would. F1,top also use engines with large displacements. How can you say all of the most powerful engines? 2JZ, RB26/28, Cummins, etc.
177SCmaro December 29, 2011 a 5:09 am
@117nathanmyers Then why are most, if not all of the most powerful automotive engines in everything from supercars, to F1, to Top Fuel dragsters V type engines? Generally you only see inline engines in low cost economy cars, with a few exceptions.
The problem with an inline 6 is it has a crankshaft that's nearly as long and as heavy as a V12's crank, but it usually has less than half the displacement. Not making good use of space, I think.
117nathanmyers December 29, 2011 a 4:26 am
@117nathanmyers v engines have power loss on the downstroke. inline engines have the pistons working in pairs making it more balanced and they have an even number of cylinders in each bank. you can't argue with this though. a 2jz weighs less than a viper engine and can produce just as much if not more power.
117nathanmyers December 29, 2011 a 4:18 am
@177SCmaro That is true the chevy small block is a light very powerful engine and I know you can produce over 1200hp with one. but an inline engine is balanced better than a v type engine and usually with modifications can easily outperform v type engine. not in every situation. I usually think of inlines as a lot of power in a short period of time. that is why they make great engines for fast acceleration. A v type engine is better for reaching a top speed. but this is not always true.
angusandleigh December 29, 2011 a 12:54 am
@318Captain it might be, with that much sheer grunt (torque) I would bet the loss through the drive train isn't as great as one might think...just my guess
angusandleigh December 29, 2011 a 12:53 am
@SolidSnake3192 ..not required...but if you want to...:)
318Captain December 28, 2011 a 10:19 am
@rmf09024 you loose some through the transmission and differential. How much? No friggin clue, but im willing to bet a loss of 40hp aint right.
177SCmaro December 28, 2011 a 1:04 am
@117nathanmyers A 2jz weighs about the same as an all aluminum small block chevy or an LS series engine. Inline 6's are just heavy as hell for their displacement.
SolidSnake3192 December 25, 2011 a 9:27 pm
why the viper doesn't have factory supercharger or turbo or twin-turbo ???
PyroBlonde7777 December 22, 2011 a 6:34 am
@ane404738 No one, because in order to achieve those numbers you would need forced induction of some kind. This engine is normally-asperated.
flugelrad1 December 20, 2011 a 7:46 pm
viper v 10 motoru çok verimsiz olduğundan amerikalılar beceremediğinden yeni nesil motoru italyan ferrari yapmaktadır amerikalılar yapamamıştır ama çok konuşmaktadırlar

640 horses with a v10 wow that nice come on some of us dont even need a degreen and can make was more with a 6 inline or even a v6 xD whose with me xDD
117nathanmyers December 20, 2011 a 10:43 am
awesome engine but I'm not a V type engine guy. thumbs up for the 2jz. way less weight yet can produce 1000+ hp.
